Medical Update

The neurologist performed an EEG this morning to further assess brain function and to rule out seizure activity. David is now off all neuro-altering medications, and remains with no signs of purposeful movement. However, the neurologist does see signs that could possibly be slight brain stem activity. In this situation, because of the potential of brain swelling to decrease and also because of the potential of "stunned" brain cells to function once again, the ICU team is going to monitor David for 48 hours and then re-assess. The ICU team remains guarded and they are not ready to give a final assessment until after that 48 hour time period.

One positive predictive factor is how well David's other organ systems have improved. His lungs have been a primary concern, but he has been tolerating well a more conventional ventilator system since this morning.

Other systems are improving, as well. He is now stable enough to undergo a repeat CT scan of his brain, which may shed important light on the situation.

As people might imagine, family and loved ones want to give David every possible chance for survival and a meaningful recovery. We also realize the probable outcome. Mark and Vickie and the Heiner family have faced this ongoing ordeal with love, courage, and strength.

Mark and Vickie--you are in our prayers as well. We recognize that miracles come from God when he sees it is what is best for us. They are real and do happen but not always the way we would like. Ultimately we have to reach the point where we say, "Thy will be done." Sharon and I have lost 2 children, Katie at age 14 and Michelle at 20 so we know on a very personal level what you are going through. We pray that you can make the best decision possible even if it means letting go. I also had a brother killed in a car accident when I was in Medical School and the absolute finality of the event was more difficult in some ways to deal with than my daughters slow deaths over many years. We miss you and your family. My heartfelt empathy for what you are going through is sincere and profound.

Dr. Heiner and family,
Psalms 138:8 says, "The Lord will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O Lord, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands." My prayer is that God will make perfect this situtation that I know is so concerning to you. David is a work of God's own hands, the Lord will not forsake him. May His perfect will be done, and may the Holy Spirit strengthen each of you as you wait upon the Lord to do his will. God is the great physician, I am asking him for a miracle on your families behalf, a miracle that would bring honor and glory to himself.
Prayfully yours,

Heiner Family,

You don't know me, but I was blessed last year by having your son enter my life when we were both teaching assistants for Bobbi Herzberg. David's kindness, intelligence, and uplifting humor always brighten even my worst days. Whenever I needed his help with a task or assignment, David would always willingly lend his brainpower to me.

You truly have raised an amazing young man, whose kindness and selflessness exceed that of most. Throughout the year, David became one of my closest friends and I am so incredibly blessed to have been able to encounter his loving and inspiring presence. David touches and uplifts so many whom he encounters. His smile is contagious and his laugh still echoes in my ear.
My constant prays are with him and I will continue fasting and urging others to pray with me.
I know David's role-whether it be here, or in heaven- has only just begun and he will continue to positively influence those around him.

Dear Heiner family;

My son drowned exactly 7 years ago, on the same date as David. I pray for you and your family in my heart. Watching him heal is NOT easy. But now that my son is 15, and he can only communicate through blinking and only slight sounds, he is the brightest spirit in our family. It takes a lot of commitment and love and patience to serve and take care of someone who has brain injury. My son is in a wheelchair but I love him so much and he adds so much to our lives. May your outcome be better, but as I read your updates, I feel the same things that I'm sure you are. He was in a coma for 17 days, and in the hospital for 7 weeks. Just be prepared for hard times, as well as wonderful times. It's all worth it, but it's hard. Becky Petersen

Our children are our life. I didn't know David but, if he is anything like his dad, then he is a Wonderful person. It is obvious that he knew Christ by the why people have responded and commented on David. I really feel that by Davids sufferings, someone else will become a brother or sister in Christ, what a Blessing to know that your son will be responsible for adding another resident in our Heavenly Home.
We love you all and will pray that God will give you peace and strenght to get thru these very hard days ahead. Please tell David we are so proud of him.

Darlene Juliana, Independent Sales Director Mary Kay Cosmetics

The Bend in the Road

Author: Helen Steiner Rice
Sometimes we come to life's crossroads
And we view what we think is the end.
But God has a much wider vision
And he knows that it's only a bend-

The road will go on and get smoother
And after we've stopped for a rest,
The path that lies hidden beyond us
Is often the path that is best.

So rest and relax and grow stronger,
Let go and let God share your load
And have faith in a brighter tomorrow-
You've just come to a bend in the road.
